In coop with Civil Society Development Center (STGM): Project for “Enhancing Local Capacity in Disaster Risk Management” (2025)
Project for Enhancing Local Capacity in Disaster Risk Management
We are here to announce the launch of the Project for Enhancing Local Capacity in Disaster Risk Management, financed by the European Union and supported by the Civil Society Development Center (STGM)!
Project Objectives and Goals
This project aims to enhance the institutional capacities of rights-based NGOs operating in Diyarbakır and Adıyaman following disasters such as earthquakes, fires, and floods. These organizations, which play crucial roles in disaster-related efforts, will be able to conduct more effective, principled, and coordinated work by making disaster risk management a core policy. Additionally, the project aims to encourage municipalities in Diyarbakır to adopt a rights-based approach to disaster risk management.
Project Activities
- In-Depth Interviews and Research Report
A total of 30 rights-based NGOs from Diyarbakır and Adıyaman will participate in in-depth interviews. These interviews will cover topics such as:
- Challenges encountered in post-disaster interventions,
- Existing capacities and needs related to disaster risk management,
- How a rights-based approach is applied in disaster processes.
The data gathered from these interviews will be analyzed and compiled into a comprehensive report, which will be shared at both local and national levels to support policy development efforts.
- Workshops
Two separate workshops will be organized with the participation of NGOs working in the field of children’s rights in Diyarbakır and Adıyaman. These workshops will address:
- Development of disaster risk management policies,
- Implementation of a rights-based approach in disaster management,
- Child-sensitive disaster response processes.
As a result, NGOs working in the field of children’s rights will be encouraged to prepare disaster risk management policy documents.
- Training Programs for Municipalities
A one-day training will be held in Diyarbakır with at least 25 participants from 18 municipalities. The primary goal of this training is to contribute to the adoption of a rights-based approach in municipal disaster management processes.
- Online Training Modules and Dissemination
Following the training programs, online training modules will be developed. These modules will contain materials to raise awareness among NGO members and volunteers regarding disaster risk management and a rights-based approach. The online training will be accessible to both NGOs and local governments.
Our Vision
Through these activities, we aim to strengthen the capacities of NGOs and local governments in high-risk disaster areas while promoting a rights-based approach. We believe that child-sensitive disaster response processes should be planned and implemented with a focus on children’s needs and rights. With this project, we strive to contribute to the development of resilient communities that respect the rights of those most affected by disasters.
